Ethics and Crystals

There is no way to be completely assured that the crystals you buy are 100% ethically sourced.

A hard truth is that few things are completely within our control every step of the way, but the good news is that we do have the power to make better choices and reduce our impact as much as possible.

Mining

Crystals are mined in various ways, some more harmful than others. Surface mining and small-scale mining have the least environmental impact and are often more community-based in their business practices. It’s still important to choose a supplier who has personal relationships with the mines and has visited them to see the labour conditions. I only work with suppliers who have these relationships and firsthand experience.

Manufacturing

Crystals destined to become jewelry (such as the popular crystal bead bracelets we all love) are assembled into the end product. This is another point where things can get murky, which is why I don’t buy pre-made crystal jewelry unless it’s from an artisan directly.

Sale

Crystals arrive at wholesalers’ warehouses and are purchased by retailers. I’ve already mentioned how I select my wholesalers. I look for knowledge (as much as possible) of the process and the mining sources as well as a willingness to answer any questions I have or my customers might have.

How can I do better?

I’ve been thinking about other ways to mitigate my impact and the impact of what I offer to you. I’m always learning more, and with knowledge comes responsibility to improve.

I am going to dig deeper for more sourcing details on every wholesale crystal I buy moving forward and add those details to the website.

I’m really excited about this one: I’ve been sourcing preloved crystals. Why not give a new home to crystals that are already available instead of taking more from the Earth? Some of the most beautiful pieces I’ve added recently came from a private collection.

As I continue to adjust my crystal sourcing, I’m always open to learning more and answering any questions.
